The world of boxing turns out in Sheffield to bid farewell to legendary trainer Brendan Ingle

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Sheffield today to bid a final farewell to legendary boxing coach Brendan Ingle at his funeral at Sheffield Cathedral.  The 77-year-old who famously guided Johnny Nelson, Naseem Hamed, Junior Witter and Kell Brook to world titles died at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital last month.

Suggestions have been made to create a permanent memorial for the trainer in Sheffield - Sheffield City Council have had discussions and former sports minister Richard Caborn has also backed the idea.

Anthony Joshua beats Dillian Whyte to win British heavyweight title

Olympic champion Anthony Joshua came through his first real test as a professional boxer, winning the British heavyweight title by knocking out Dillian Whyte in the seventh round.  He came into the fight on the back of 14 straight knockouts and can now look forward to being in the frame for some highline encounters over the coming year.

Anthony Joshua, send off for Team GB, Sheffield 2012

He would prefer to fight Derek Chisora next rather than David Haye or Tyson Fury saying "I need to be fighting people who are hungry and good enough but who I still have a good capability of beating"

Kell Brook rules out clash with Amir Khan - for now

Sheffield's Kell Brook who defends his IBF Welterweight title against Jo Jo Dan at the MotorPoint Arena in Sheffield on Saturday, has ruled out a 2015 fight with British rival Amir Khan.

Kell, who is back after being stabbed while on holiday in Tenerife last September, wants to focus instead on a potential clash with Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.  The pair go head-to-head at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday 2nd May in what is likely to be the most expensive pay-per-view match in UK boxing history.

Sheffield Varsity Games 2013 - Boxing

A good card at the Octagon Centre last night to see a variety of matches which culminated in 3 bouts between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

My favourite shot of the night was this one of Sam Gunter (Captain, University of Sheffield boxing) drawing blood from Rory Balfour (Durham University):

Balfour went on to win with a unanimous points decision, much to the delight of the away (Sheffield Hallam University) fans.
