Katarina Johnson-Thompson breaks UK Women's High Jump Record

The Sainsbury’s British Athletics Indoor Championships saw a number of exciting head to heads as British Indoor titles were won, but the biggest highlight of Saturdays performances was undoubtedly a British Women's High Jump record performance by 2013 World Championship fourth placer Katarina Johnson-Thompson.  She simply turned on her high-jumping afterburners as she went on to clear 1.96m to surpass the national record of 1.95m shared by Dianna Davies, Jessica Ennis, Debbi Marti and Susan Moncrieff.
 

Silver-medallist Nisbet not only managed a PB, but her 1.87m clearance marked a Scottish National indoor record for the athlete already bound for the Commonwealth games as part of Team Scotland.

Liverpool Harrier Johnson-Thompson is in sizzling form this year, having already gained several PBs at the Northern Indoor Championships in January and is expected to compete in the pentathlon in Poland and will compete at the Dutch Championships next week in a bid to qualify for the event.  But in Sheffield, Johnson-Thompson - whose previous best in the high jump was 1.89m - eclipsed Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill's high jump best by two centimetres.  "It's a proud moment. I can't believe it," she said.  "I knew I was in good form because I had a good session in Loughborough last week and had a really good high jump session."

GB figure skaters in team event at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

Britain's figure skaters have earned a place in a new-look team event at the Sochi Winter Olympics in February. The team event, appearing at the Games for the first time, sees six skaters - ice dance and pairs couples, plus a man and a woman - compete with their points combined for an overall team score.

Likely names to be included in the squad are:  National champion Matthew Parris, Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland (ice dance), Stacey Kemp and David King (pairs) and Jenna McCorkell (pictured above) in the women's event.

Sheffield Varsity 2013

Well, it all 'ended' yesterday on a bit of a b*m note as Sheffield Wednesday decided that they didn't want two student games cutting up their pitch ahead of an important clash with Cardiff City their pitch was frozen and so a risk to health and safety.  So, football and a few other clashes still to be decided but it leaves the University of Sheffield in the position of finally being able to wrest the Varsity Trophy away from the cabinet at Hallam Univesity where it has been screwed down for the last 9 years.....

I finished off yesterday with photos of badminton, kaufball and athletics at a very dim and dingy EIS (I did offer them 10 bob for the electric meter).  It really pushed the cameras to get any sort of half-decent speed at 6400 ISO and f/2.8 - thank goodness for the ability to drag details out of the shadows in Photoshop!

Will try to put some photos on my website this weekend after a Saturday morning spent being creative (or trying to be) with two fencers, a black backdrop and some glow-sticks!

Many thanks to the wonderful people at Leon Paul who had some photos of mine from the recent Beazley Trophy/Corble Cup matches and have kindly sent on some fencing gear to allow me to (hopefully) take some arty-type shots (well at least prepare better for them anyway).

No pressure then.......now, how do I sneak a fencing foil and mask into the house, past Mrs C...???!?!?
