Jazz Carlin named Athlete of the Year by British Swimming

Congratulations to Jazz Carlin whose fantastic year has been recognized by British Swimming who have named her Athlete of the Year for 2014.

She became the first Welsh woman in 40 years to win Commonwealth Games gold in the pool at Glasgow 2014 with victory in the 800m freestyle.  She also won 400m and 800m freestyle goldsat the European Championships.   "This year has been amazing, but I am working hard for 2015 and have set my sights on an Olympic spot," she said.
 

She also contributed in February this year to a fantastic world record of 100 swimmers each swimming 100m in aid of SWIM 4 LEUKAEMIA at Ponds Forge Sheffield.  Organised by her boyfriend Lewis Coleman, they smashed the record, completing the course in 1 hour 29 minutes 3 seconds.

Swimmers smash World Record to help beat Leukaemia

Swimmers at Ponds Forge in Sheffield today smashed the World Record for 100 swimmers doing 100 metres in the pool.  The current record was 1hour 37mins 53secs, set at the Pizzey Park Sporting Complex in Miami, Queensland, Australia on 29 October 2011.

The event was organised by Lewis Coleman who was inspired to do something when in June 2012 his Mum was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

The Record attempting team was led off by 10 year old Oliver Coleman and anchored by Lewis and was supported by some of Great Britain’s finest swimmers including 30 Olympians, Olympic Medalists, World Record Holders, World Commonwealth & European Medalists and over 50 Great Britain Internationals.

Lewis Coleman is assembling other GB swimmers and Olympians to break a world record

GB Swimmer and member of City of Sheffield swimming, Lewis Coleman is raising funds for Leukaemia Research with a World Record attempt.

 

The record attempt will take place on the 1st February 2014 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. The challenge itself will involve a relay team of 100 different swimmers each swimming 100m so that's 4 lengths of your local pool if it's 25m. The record currently stands at 1 hour 53 mins and 13 seconds, which is an average of 67.2 seconds per swimmer, thats less than 18 seconds per length. To beat the record the team will need to average faster than 67.2, I believe that the team will be able to average faster than that.
