Had a blast last night taking some team pix for Sheffield Hallam University Men's basketball teams.  Well done on the season so far - BUCS this weekend then Varsity to look forward to.....

Fab night at the EIS as the Sheffield Sharks take on the Junior Sheffield Sharks

There was a great end to the year (ok, I know the Sharks are away in London on 30th Dec) at the EIS last night as the Sheffield Sharks took on the Junior Sheffield Sharks.

After 5 quarters the score was tied at 127 apiece and everyone had enjoyed not only the match but a shooting competition and a dunk competition.

Sheffield Sharks end the year on a high

Sheffield Shaerks basketball team over-turned a 35-43 half-time deficit to beat London Lions 69-66 in a thrilling end to 2015.

Atiba Lyons' men ran out worthy winners from a physical context where they stood up to the pressure and held their nerve in the last quarter to win by three, cheered on the great atmosphere from the #sharknation.

Sheffield Junior Saints U14s start well in the National Basketball playoffs

Sheffield Junior Saints U14s continued their unbeaten season with a 90-69 win over Liverpool at All Saints school today in the first round of playoffs.

An untypical first quarter saw them well down at 10-25 as Liverpool defended well and scored regularly in what looked to be a tough game for the Saints.  After that, Saints found their rythmn, pulled the deficit back to 35-41 at half-time, led 59-56 at the third and then scored 31-13 in the fourth.

Sheffield Junior Saints U14s go the perfect regular season

Well done to Sheffield Junior Saints U14s who triumphed 132-41 against Killamarsh Arrows yesterday to finish the regular season as 16-0 winners of the England Basketball North Division.

 

There will be some big challenges ahead in the National playoff rounds in April/May but they have set a high benchmark to carry on from.

Well done also to the coaches, management and supporters, taxi drivers, bag-carriers, wallets - also known as parents.

Sheffield Junior Saints U14s carry on their winning streak

Sheffield Junior Saints U14s posted an impressive 135-20 score against Tees Valley Mohawks to lead the North Divison 12-0.  They were 8-0 up inside the first minute and then played some controlled basketball with regular roations from the bench to cap off another good team performance.

The team spirit and strength from the bench made for an enjoyable performance against a Middlesbrough side that kept on playing til the final whistle.

Is there a problem with sport participation in the UK?

The latest Active People Survey from Sport England has, perhaps surprisingly, indicated an overall fall of 125,100 less people playing sport for at least 30 minutes at  a moderate intensity.  During the period Oct 2014 to Oct 2014, 15.7m people aged 16 or older played sport at this level - this is down 125,100 on the previous report (but up 1.63m compared to 2005/6).

The biggest loser seems to have been swimming which has seen a 245,000 fall in participation numbers over the last year, even though 2.69m people swam at least once a week for 30 minutes between October 2013 and October 2014.

"I am disappointed with these figures, said Sport England chief executive Jennie Price.  Swimming has lagged behind running and the gym in terms of offering an attractive, modern experience to people who want to play sport and exercise.  That has to change and to change quickly."

Swimming remains the country's most popular sport but Price added she was "very concerned" about the drop in numbers.  The outcome of Sport England's latest survey means that swimming, along with other sports such as basketball, must wait until March to find out if its funding is affected.

Doughnut makers in Sheffield looking at possible redundancies

The tradition at Sheffield Junior Saints basketball is that the player who scores the 100th point in a game brings doughnuts to training the following week.

The first four matches of the season each resulted in scores well over 100, but this last weekend Leeds Force restricted them to a measly 96 points....

The league table still looks good, even though there will be doughnuts going stale on the shelves this week.

Sheffield Saints clip the wings of the York Eagles

Sheffield Saints U14 basketball team made the best possible start to their new season with a comprehensive 126-15 victory over the York Eagles at All Saints in Sheffield today.

Right from the off, Saint were out to show their coaches how they mean to go on this season and as the first quarter came to an end the score was an impresive 42-2.  All 10 team members played up and made a good contribution to a team that is aiming for a place in the final four this season, having lost out so narrowly last year.  Read more at: http://junior-saints.co.uk/

Sheffield Saints host USA Select

The City of Sheffield Saints basketball team faced a tough pre-season challenge on Thursday 11th September when a USA Select Team were their visitors.

The USA Select teams have been coming to Europe for many years, most of the players are out of the American college system, and some have been recruited by EB and BBL teams. 

 An exciting game finished 100-59 in favour of the visitors who were ahead throughout the game which was played in a high tempo end-to-end contest.
