Jonny Mellor and Lauren Howarth take Great Yorkshire Run titles

Jonny Mellor and Lauren Howarth won the ninth Great Yorkshire Run in 29:12 and 33:49 respectively for the 10km event in Sheffield.

Mellor who regained the title he last won in 2012 was more than a minute ahead of Kenya's Jackson Biwott (30:19) and Ethiopia's Wondiye Indelbu (30:21).

Howarth, on her debut, was another clear winner as she beat Lauren Deadman (34:15) and Sophie Cowper (35:14).  Howarth’s win follows four-in-a-row victories in Sheffield for European cross-country champion Gemma Steel, who decided to focus instead on October's Great Scottish Run.

A side event in the competiton is the annual “War of the Roses” challenge.  This is a competition between runners from Yorkshire (white rose on their race number) and Lancashire (red rose).  The average time of the competitors was fastest again this year for Yorkshire who retain the War of the Roses trophy.

The Great Yorkshire Run returns to Sheffield for it's ninth running

It looks as if the sun will shine again this weekend for the 9th running of the Great Yorkshire Run - the annual 10k that takes place along Sheffield's streets.

Gemma Steel will be looking to make it 5-in-a-row following her success last year though she will probably face stiff competition from Lauren Howarth and Lauren Deadman.

Gemma Steel wins (again) in 2014

In the men’s race, Chris Thompson continues his comeback from injury and will be up against Ryan McLeod, Johnny Mellor, Keith Gerrard, Sam Stabler, Sean Fontana, Kenya’s Jackson Biwott and Ethiopia’s Wondiye Indelbu.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain, 119th Lord Mayor of the City of Sheffield

I was recently honoured to be asked to take the official photograph for Sheffield's Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Talib Hussain and Yasmin Saddiq.

The photo was taken in the Lord Mayor's parlour in the style of previous photos.  It was taken on a Nikon D800 with a 24-70mm lens.  I used two Nikon SB-900 flashguns in an umbrella reflector as a fill to the natural daylight that was lighting the room (low autumn sunshine) but had to be mindful not to put too much by way of highlight on the reflective wooden panels behind.

Apart from welcoming visitors to the main reception of the Town Hall, a copy of the Lord Mayor was converted to black and white and will be printed and framed to join the other photos of previous Lord Mayors in his ante-room.

So, farewell Michaela Tabb

Former referee Michaela Tabb's court case against World Snooker has reached a 'confidential accommodation'.

Michaela Tabb after the 2012 World Championship final

She was the first woman to referee in a ranking tournament (2002 Welsh Open) and went on to referee two World Championship finals (2009 and 2012).

She'll be missed on the circuit where she was a popular figure.

City of Sheffield athletes flying high at the Youth Development League final

The end-of-season finale for this year's YDL was held on a sunny Sunday at the Alexander Stadium, Perry Barr, Birmingham.  Some photos of high-flying Sheffield and Dearne athletes below:

Adam Hague, World Junior Pole Vault champion in the Men's U20 Triple Jump.

Back in  more familiar territory, Adam Hague goes over at 5.25m for a League record just underneath a Ryanair(?) flight.

Joe Hobson, decathlete, competing in the Men's U20 High Jump.

Things that take a long time to do....

In 1969, Apollo 11 blasted off on 16th July, spent 21 hours on the moon and splashed down 8 days later.

The Snooker World Championships at the Crucible in Sheffield run over 17 days each year.

The 2012 Olympics in London ran from 27th July to 12th August - 17 days in total.

The 2014 Football World Cup ran from 12th June to 13th July - a total of 32 days......which only just beats the 29 days that it took EE to unlock my Samsung phone.

So, the moral of the story is: we can put a man on the moon, but if you ask EE to do a simple thing, expect it to take a little longer - much longer.
